What to do if I am a victim of sexual assault?

Find a safe environment - anywhere away from the attacker. Ask a trusted friend stay with you for moral support.

Preserve evidence of the attack - don't bathe or brush your teeth. Write down all the details you can recall about the attack & the attacker.

Report the assault to law enforcement or contact the local crisis hotline at (405) 624-3020 or the national hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673)

Go to Stillwater Medical Center or your local hospital to determine if medical intervention is necessary and to have a forensic exam. Even with no physical injuries, it is important to determine the risks of STDs and pregnancy and to preserve evidence.

Remember it wasn't your fault.

Recognize that healing from rape takes time. Give yourself the time you need.

Know that it's never too late to ask for help. Even if the attack happened years ago, Stillwater Domestic Violence can provide counseling services. Many victims do not realize they need help until months or years later.
